Important information for parents of students in ID Mild I & II classes
April 23, 2017
Parents of students in ID Mild I and II classes are invited to attend one of two information sessions about upcoming changes to your child’s school assignment. Please read the following information carefully, then see below for meeting dates and locations.
What is this about?
Special Education Services will be implementing some exciting changes that begin with the 2017 - 2018 school year. Over the next four years Special Education Services Elementary Regional Programs that are currently the ID Mild I and ID Mild II programs will be phased out and the students participating in these programs will be provided their special education and related services at their base schools.
Why is this happening?
Parents frequently request their child be assigned to their base school or schools as close to their home as possible. Students assigned to the current ID Mild I and II regional programs participate in the general curriculum designed for all students not on the Extended Content Standards. We believe these changes will provide many benefits for students and their families, including:
- Students will be able to attend school with their siblings and neighborhood peers.
- Students will have more opportunities to become an integral part of the school community.
- In most cases, travel times to school will be shorter.
How will my child be affected?
As your child returns to their base school during the four year plan they will continue to receive appropriate special education and related services as outlined in their IEP and instruction tailored to their specific learning needs. In many instances, students will have more access to their typical grade level class.
What is the timeline?
Many of the students attending the following classes for the 2017 - 2018 will be assigned to their base schools for the 2017 - 2018 school year. Their families have been notified individually but are encouraged to attend one of the information sessions.
- Wiley - ID Mild I
- Zebulon - ID Mild I and II
- Penny Road - ID Mild I
- Fuller - ID Mild I
- Timber Drive - ID Mild I
- Morrisville - ID Mild I
The timeline for remaining students will be completed during the 2017 - 2018 school year.
