Important information for parents of students attending ID Moderate and AU classes
April 23, 2017
You’re invited to an information session about upcoming changes in Extended Content Classes that will occur over the next four years. Please read the following information carefully, then see below for meeting dates and locations.
What is this about?
Special Education Services will be implementing some exciting changes that begin with the 2017 - 2018 school year. In order to have as many students as possible attend their base schools SES has developed a four year plan for students assigned to ID Moderate and AU classes to be served in their base school at the middle and high school levels and be served in regional programs closer to home at the elementary level. These classes will be Extended Content Support (ECS) classes.
Why is this happening?
Parents frequently request their child be assigned to their base school or schools as close to their home as possible. In addition, we believe there will be many benefits for students and their families, including:
- In many cases, students will be able to attend school with their siblings and neighborhood peers.
- Students will have more opportunities to become an integral part of the school community.
- Students will have more opportunities to engage in community based instruction and job training opportunities within the communities where they live.
How will my child be affected?
Aside from the benefits stated above, your child will continue to receive appropriate special education and related services as outlined in their IEP and instruction tailored to their specific learning needs.
What is the timeline?
Students who live in the following base attendance areas will change schools in 2017 - 2018:
- Elementary: Banks Road, Hortons Creek, Oakview and Rogers Lane
- Middle: Holly Grove, Lufkin Road, River Bend and West Millbrook
- High: Apex Friendship, East Wake, Knightdale, Rolesville, Wake Forest and Wakefield
Families impacted for the 2017 - 2018 school year have been notified individually but are encouraged to attend one of the information sessions.
The timeline for remaining students will be completed during the 2017 - 2018 school year.
